ADOLESCENT GYNECOMASTIA

Adolescent gynecomastia occurs during the early teenage years typically 12 to 13 years old.  The hormone balance is very critical during this time.  The hormone estrogen encourages female characteristics to develop and testosterone causes male development.  The imbalance of these hormones with an over balance of estrogen will cause breast bud development in males causing gynecomastia.

Adolescent gynecomastia will usually regress within 18 months of development.  When breast enlargement does not regress in a timely fashion, the emotional consequence that can result in the teenage years can be long lasting for both emotional and social development.

Despite all efforts, gynecomastia can further affect self-esteem and social development.  A team of approach for these young men is required with an Endocrinologist, dietician, and social support network.  If all efforts are unsuccessful then surgical intervention may be reasonable to prevent further emotional and social deterioration.

Gynecomastia Surgery-Minimal Invasive Technique

Gynecomastia is female-like breast on a man.  Forty to sixty percent of men suffer from this medical condition.  Gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction surgery is the 4th most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed this past year. In 2009, 15,050 mens breasts surgery was performed in the United States.  This is illustrated in Cosmetic Trends by The American Society of Plastic Surgery.
The social embarrassment and psychological impact on a male's life is profound.  Men and parent of teenagers seek out cures on a daily bases. Many of which promise great claims only to frustrate the user.  The only real solution for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery.

The minimal invasive gynecomastia-male breast reduction technique is done through a very small incision. First, liposuction is performed. This will remove fat tissue from around the gland and make it easier to remove. A small sharp fork-like knife is inserted through the incision.  The tissue is released which is holding the gland in its' anatomical position. The gynecomastia gland can know be pulled out of the small incision intact. Please examine the photos below.  The photos are of a patient of Miguel A. Delgado, MD a gynecomastia specialist in San Francisco, California.

This minimal invasive male breast reduction technique is an excellent option for some patients who have mild to moderate gynecomastia. Other procedures are used for more advanced cases.

As you can see from the post operative photo above the incision is very small and difficult to see. The current male breast reduction surgical techniques are varied depending on the severity.  One of my favorites is the minimal invasive technique which requires a small 3 to 4 millimeter incision.
